Enough for Everyone
The Planet’s Resources, the Limits of Abundance, and the Possible Road to a Post-Scarcity Economy
Does humanity lack the atoms and energy for everyone to live well, or the infrastructure and institutions that would turn abundance into access? This book gives a conditional verdict, explicit timelines, and a careful account of the scarcities—time, ecology, place, trust, status, consent, and power—that technology cannot simply manufacture away.
A conditional verdict for material abundance
Enough for Everyone asks a narrower and more useful question than whether resources are infinite. Could every person reliably obtain nutritious food, safe water, decent housing, household energy, health care, education, connectivity, and reasonable mobility without survival consuming most of life? Its answer is yes—with plausible technology and within this century—but only if productive capacity becomes effective access.
The analysis keeps three levels separate. Physical potential concerns solar flow, minerals, water, land, and biological yields. Industrial capacity concerns mines, refineries, grids, factories, storage, housing, logistics, skills, and robots. Social access concerns ownership, prices, public guarantees, externalized risks, and authority. Abundance at the first level can coexist with bottlenecks at the second and poverty at the third.
The planet is not the nearest bottleneck
Energy offers the most generous balance sheet, while materials are constrained less by a lack of atoms than by extraction, refining, concentration, ecological damage, and the time required to expand infrastructure. Food already exists at enormous scale, yet hunger persists through poverty, conflict, waste, and unequal access. Urban water can increasingly be desalinated and recycled, but agriculture still depends on rainfall, soil, watersheds, and geography. Housing can become cheaper to build while land, permits, and surrounding services preserve scarcity.
This is not a triumphalist account of technology. The biosphere contains thresholds and histories that cheap energy cannot reconstruct at will. Durable buildings, repair, recycling, substitution, compact settlement, lower-impact diets, protected ecosystems, and redundant supply chains determine whether abundance becomes resilient rather than another acceleration of extraction.
Enough is not infinite, but it can be universal.
What cannot be manufactured on demand
Material sufficiency does not abolish economics. Human time, other people’s attention, desired places, intact ecosystems, political power, status, unique objects, consent, intimacy, and trust remain scarce or relational. Automation can free hours but cannot let one sequential life contain every possibility. Technology can distribute tools while concentrating the infrastructure that decides who may use them.
The book therefore treats basic post-scarcity as a political achievement enabled by technology. Its scenarios place a possible threshold in some rich economies between 2040 and 2060 and a global version between 2070 and 2100, with probabilities explicitly presented as authorial judgments rather than institutional forecasts. Universal services, distributed ownership, real competition, privacy, and limits on converting wealth into political domination matter as much as robots or terawatts.
From survival discipline to meaningful work
An abundant society still needs motivation, structure, care, challenge, contribution, and legitimate paths to prestige. The final obstacle is not a claim that human nature is simply greedy; it is the institutional habit of using essentials to compel obedience and measuring merit against other people’s deprivation. The practical goal is a material floor below which nobody falls, with ambition and difference continuing above it without becoming a right to dominate.
